An internal view of a Trojan UV system

Disinfection

Ultraviolet (UV) light is well established as a fast acting, point-of-contact disinfection technology for water treatment. UV, at the 254 nm wavelength, penetrates the cell walls of microorganisms and permanently alters their DNA structure – rendering them inactive and unable to reproduce. UV for broad-based disinfection:

  • eliminates bacteria, viruses and chlorine-resistant protozoa
  • penetrates the cell wall of microorganisms, attacking DNA genetic material and preventing replication
  • is typically characterized as a 3-Log reduction of microorganisms, and is based on a dose of 30 mJ/cm2 at the end of lamp life

UV, A Better way

Chlorine can alter the taste and odor of water, a particularly important consideration in food and beverage applications, and can damage RO membranes. Furthermore, chlorine and ozone may produce by-products  such as trihalomethanes (THMs) and bromate, respectively. UV light does not produce harmful by-products and is safe, effective, and environmentally friendly.
